The Miami Dolphins will need their defense to redouble their efforts if they want to have a chance to beat the Detroit Lions this Sunday and keep control of their playoff hopes.
The Miami Dolphins, now 4-2 after their victory over the Bears, will try to extend their victory this Sunday against the Detroit Lions. The defense has played well so far, but it needs to light up to keep the advantage over Matt Stafford.
Good news comes from the dolphin camp this week. it seems that Bobby McCain and Cam Wake will both come back to action. This news should speak for itself; Wake is a good start when he is healthy and still offers a lot of productivity when he plays. McCain is CB2 and has played well this season. We also saw the alternative when he is with Torry McTyer and Cordrea Tankersley. I'm glad McCain is back.
It also seems that Charles Harris will be back for the second week in a row. T.J. McDonald and Reshad Jones were both on the list; Jones plays with his shoulder injury and McDonald avoids a knee injury. Both securities were full participants for each practice, so there is nothing to see here and thankfully. Jones is a MUST for this team to continue to find success.
Andre Branch, who returned to the field last week, and Jonathan Woodard, who proved himself against the Bear after being promoted from the training team a few weeks ago, summarizes the problem of injuries. Branch should be back while he plays despite his knee injury and Woodard will not play after suffering a concussion.
The Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions have not met since the 2014 season. The Lions have won the last competition, but the Dolphins have the historic advantage with a 7-4 record. Lions currently have a record of 2 or 3 and are looking to keep their season alive.
Matt Stafford, the Lions quarterback, plays the lead role in this game. It's open to discussion, but it's a quarter of a franchise and will one day be considered a member of the Hall of Fame. When you play against a player who is even remotely in this discussion, you must be careful.
Stafford is however subject to many errors. It can launch several interceptions in a game and that's what I intend to bet on. Obtaining interceptions will be a huge key if the Dolphins want to win another victory.
The offensive line of Detroit is pretty good. Frank Ragnow on the left guard and Taylor Decker on the left tackle. This could be a potential problem for Robert Quinn, so it will be important for him to use his entire repertoire of moves; I have no doubt that he will be able to create some pressure despite the effectiveness of Decker and Ragnow.
Ricky Wagner and T.J. The Langs are nothing to make fun of one or the other. I am excited to see how Cam Wake succeeds in this encounter with his return to the field. Lang has recovered from a concussion this week, but that should not have a major effect on his game. I do not know who will make the most of the match; it sounds pretty same, but Wake still has athleticism to do something about it.
Vincent Taylor is a budding star. He continues to make his presence felt on the field and he did so by getting a bag from last week. I do not worry about the rotation Akeem Spence, Davon Godchaux and Vincent Taylor. If you add Cameron Malveaux to the mix, you have a good inner line secretly.
The Lions finally found an effective game for the first time of the decade in their rookie Kerryon Johnson. Johnson has struggled in the past few weeks, but was full this week in his practices. It is therefore a person to whom they will have to prepare.
Now let's go to the body of linebackers. This is a unit from top to bottom with the sample size we have seen so far this season. Raekwon McMillan is still gaining foothold. He will have great games, but he will also have games where he looks like a rookie, which is essentially what he is. Jerome Baker is also a recruit and has good and bad weeks. He plays better than McMillan, but he also has those rookie moments. Patience is essential for both, but they both have a reasonable chance to play well against the Lions.
I like to write about Kiko Alonso in his own paragraph because he is the best linebacker of the Dolphins so far. I mentioned that Reshad Jones was a must for this team, well, Alonso is not far behind. He is one of the best dolphins and his return to weakness has worked wonders. He has an unnatural penchant for creating and recovering turnovers. Causing and recovering these turnovers will be vital to this post-season team's potential. It's strange to think of that after Alonso was punching bag last year, but he's playing at the Pro-Bowl level.
I'm not too concerned about the tight-end group of Lions. Luke Willson, Levine Toilolo and Michael Roberts do not really sell tickets and do not really surrender to the power of the stars. The dolphin defense will keep these guys in check.
By cons, Lions receivers are a talented group. Marvin Jones, Golden Tate and Kenny Golladay are all very good smugglers and all are capable of a big day. There is no WR1 for Xavien Howard to watch, so he and Bobby McCain will have to get ready for all three. Normally, Theo Riddick would also be a force that the Dolphins should take into account (he was a huge factor in the last Dolphins-Lions match), but he is missing this week.
The safety group has become a centerpiece of the team and, by chance, Reshad Jones and T.J. McDonald's will begin. Minkah Fitzpatrick will also continue his tasks in the slot. He has been extremely effective in his role. In fact, Pro Football Focus announced on Twitter that Fitzpatrick was the third-ranked NFL player in terms of the lowest allowed rating in terms of coverage. This comes from Fitzpatrick's role as nickel and it is very encouraging to see him play as well.
