MIAMI (AP) – Sandy Alcantara was one of the top hopes that the Miami Marlins gained in their off-season review, and he showed a lot of promise in his first career start .
The 22-year-old right-hander made his highly anticipated debut at the Marlins and only allowed one run in five innings as the Miami Marlins defeated the New York Mets 8-2 on Friday evening.
"It's really good," says Alcantara. "I'm super excited."
Alcantara (1-0) withdrew two of them and dropped five walks and three hits.
"A bit wild, a little boring with the hitting area, but being able to get through five – it's still a work in progress," said Marlins manager Don Mattingly.
The 22-year-old right-hander was the best prospect in the off-season trade that sent Marcell Ozuna to the St. Louis Cardinals. Alcantara made eight relief appearances for the Cardinals last season.
"(Alcantara) has a very promising future," said Mets manager Mickey Callaway.
JT Riddle scored a three-run homerun and Lewis Brinson, who had three hits, also had a crucial third set of six points.
"JT is able to type that just a little bit from there and we are in pretty good shape," Mattingly said.
Marlins sensor J.T. Realmuto returned to the lineup after missing four games due to an injury to the hand. Realmuto went 1 in 4 with a RBI and also picked up a runner at second base.
"That's one of the reasons he's the best receiver of all baseball games," said Riddle about Realmuto's selection. "To do things like that, a lot of people do not do that and for a catcher to do that defensively, the more the way he scales the bat, it's very good."
Corey Oswalt of New York (0-1) started instead of Jacob deGrom, who was struck hours before the game to settle a family affair. The Mets expect DeGrom to start Saturday afternoon.
Oswalt looked nothing like deGrom, whose 1.69 MPM is the best of the majors. Oswalt allowed six hits and six points in just 2 innings and 2/3. The six rounds allowed by Oswalt came in the third inning.
"It has not changed anything," Oswalt said about the late notice. "I went there and I tried to attack the area, I just did not do enough places today."
Brinson finished third with his 10th run of the season. Realmuto and Starlin Castro followed with single scorers before Riddle's three straight-line points gave the Marlins a 6-0 lead.
Devin Mesoraco had a RBI double for the Mets, who lost nine out of 10.
"We were not really in this game tonight," Callaway said.
Cameron Maybin knocked Brinson in sixth to give the Marlins a 7-1 lead.
BRINSON TRIPLE CYCLE SHY
Brinson recorded a singles, doubles and a home run for his third game this month with at least three hits. He founded a double game in his fourth fight to foil his attempt for the cycle.
BAUTISTA AND FLORES RIGHT FORWARD 14
Jose Bautista and Wilmer Flores of New York have both reached the base, each extending their series to 14 games.
