Michael Avenatti, a frequent critic of President Trump and the lawyer for adult movie star Stormy Daniels, was reportedly arrested on charges of domestic violence on Wednesday.

The charges were laid as a result of an alleged incident on Tuesday and prompted authorities to respond and collect a report, said an unidentified law enforcement official at The Associated Press. However, Avenatti was reportedly arrested on Wednesday.

When asked to confirm information on the arrest announced by Avenatti, a Los Angeles Police Information Officer confirmed to Fox News that a person had been arrested for domestic violence. The agent did not confirm that it was indeed Avenatti, claiming that the identity would be revealed once the reservation was made.

Avenatti did not immediately respond to Fox News's request for comment.

TMZ, who for the first time announced the news of his arrest, said the lawyer had "thrown" his wife "out of the apartment".

Avenatti, who once said he was considering a presidential race against Trump in 2020, drew attention when he started representing Daniels.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, said that she had had an affair with Trump in 2006 before being president and had started lawsuits to invalidate the confidentiality agreement that she had signed a few days before the 2016 presidential election. She also sued Trump and his former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, alleging defamation.

Brooke Singman of Fox News and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
