The 1899 storm crossed the Florida Keys in the Gulf of Mexico, where it strengthened to become a Category 2 storm. Carrabelle, a seaside resort 32 km west of Apalachicola, does not more than nine houses and currently houses more than 2,700 people.

It is unclear which of the 15 documented vessels were discovered by Michael on the Franklin County barrier island, but they have an unobstructed view of the Gulf of Mexico near the west end of the # 39; island.

Sarah Revell, of the Florida State Department, told the Democrat that the agency was not planning to send archeologists to visit the site at the moment because "the resources of the 39, state are assigned to more urgent recovery efforts after a hurricane ".
