COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) – Michigan State completed a tough week for Maryland's outstanding football program, using a strong defensive performance to defeat the Terrapins 24-3 without a punch on Saturday.
Connor Heyward had 157 yards and two touchdowns to help the Spartans (6-3, 4-2 Big Ten) become eligible for the second year in a row after falling 3-9 in 2016.
The Terrapins (5-4, 3-3) only managed 100 yards and nine first tries for Matt Canada, acting coach and offensive coordinator.
It was an end that made one think a weird week for Maryland. On Tuesday, head coach DJ Durkin was reinstated by the University System's board of directors following a survey of the culture of the football program. The investigation was launched shortly after University President Wallace Loh admitted in August that "mistakes had been made" in the treatment of Maryland offensive lineman Jordan McNair, who had collapsed during an off-season session and died of heat stroke two weeks later.
The decision to bring Durkin back from paid administrative leave has created such fury among students and politicians that Loh dismissed Durkin on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the chairman of the board of governors resigned.
Several media reported that three players left Tuesday a meeting with Durkin. After the training that day, the alternate bettor, who had talked about the coaching staff, was allegedly assaulted by a teammate who was supporting Durkin.
After all these distractions, the Terrapins were looking to become eligible for the bowl with their third win in four games. Instead, they were late and never managed to get the offense.
Maryland's efforts to return were thwarted by two fourth-quarter turnovers. Javon Leake lost a breakaway on the MSU 26 and Byron Cowart escaped on an interception return with the Spartans recovering in the end zone for a touchdown.
At the next game, Heyward scored an 80-yard touchdown for a 24-3 lead with 11 minutes remaining.
The country's strong home run defense limited Maryland's play power to 26 yards (out of 29 races). Kasim Hill scored 8 points for 21 for 74 yards for the Terps on a very windy day.

State of Michigan: The Spartans did not have much production from senior quarterback Brian Lewerke, who returned from a shoulder injury 11 for 20 yards for 87 yards and an interception before being replaced by the rookie Rocky Lombardi. There is work to be done in the passing game, but the defense is good enough to make up for that and keep the state of Michigan competitive against any enemy.
Maryland: When the Terps are bad, they are bad. The one-dimensional Maryland offensive has yet burst, and these two fourth-quarter turnovers have not helped. The four defeats of Maryland this season ended in a total of 86 points.
