The Villanova Wildcats defeated the Michigan Wolverines in last season's national championship game.
Wednesday in Philadelphia, however, the roles were reversed.
Under the direction of former goalkeeper Charles Matthews, Michigan dismantled Villanova 73-46 at the pavilion. Matthews, who had only six points in the title game, led all scorers with 19 points. He also added three blocks.
Villanova started the season in 8th place Amway Coaches Poll, while Michigan started 18th. Both teams entered undefeated Wednesday.
Ignas Brazdeikis, a freshman from Lithuania who played basketball at high school in Canada, was also impressive, scoring 18 points and adding seven boards. Zavier Simpson may have had Michigan's best all-time game, scoring nine points and six assists and five interceptions.
The Wildcats, who made 21 turnovers, are clearly a shell of themselves, at least for the moment, coming back just two starters from their national team. This does not include Donte DiVincenzo, the last most outstanding Final Four Seasons player.
