ST. Paul, Minnesota (AP) – Animal health officials said that a midgesian-transmitted disease had been reported in Minnesota deer for the first time.

The Minnesota Board of Animal Health has confirmed the first cases of epizootic haemorrhagic disease – or DHU – in a small herd of captive white-tailed deer in Goodhue County.

According to officials, six of the seven animals died of the disease earlier this month. The remaining money seems to be good for health and shows no signs of illness.

Although it is the first detection of the disease in the Minnesota deer, it is widespread throughout North America. The disease had already been detected in two cattle in Minnesota in Brown County in 2012 and in Murray County in 2013.

The virus is transmitted between deer by gnats or midges. There is no known risk to people's health.
