Former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka is recovering at a Florida hospital after suffering a heart attack earlier this week.
According to WGN, the fear of health came on Wednesday as Ditka was playing golf in Naples. Steve Mandell, Ditka's longtime agent, told ESPN that the Professional Football Hall of Fame should be brought home from hospital in the coming days after being endowed with a pacemaker .
"The trainer Ditka had a mild heart attack earlier this week, doctors have inserted a pacemaker and he is much better," Mandell said. "He appreciates the surge of support and looks forward to coming back soon."
This is not the first time that Ditka is treating a heart problem. In November 1988, the former Bears coach had suffered a heart attack during the NFL regular season. However, Ditka did not let him slow down as he returned to the sidelines just 11 days later.
The 79-year-old coach has largely been sidelined in recent years after a long career in which he played football, coached or talked about football.
Ditka's time in the NFL began in 1961 when the Bears selected him with the fifth overall draft pick of the NFL. Ditka spent 12 seasons in the NFL, including the Bears (1961-1966), Eagles (1967-1968) and Cowboys (1969-1972). Ditka won his only Super Bowl as a player in the 1971 season when the Cowboys beat the Dolphins 24-3 at Super Bowl VI. The win earned Ditka two NFL titles in his career. In 1963, he also won the title with the Bears. Ditka eventually became the first member of the restricted team to be inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame (1988).
Ten years after playing his last defeat, Ditka returned to Chicago to take up the Bears' coaching position in 1982. As a Bears coach, Ditka became a living legend in 1985 when she was in action. he led one of the largest NFL history teams to a 15-1 season and a victory at the XX Super Bowl. Ditka is still such an icon in Chicago that the current Bears quarterback, Mitchell Trubisky, is disguised as himself for Halloween.
Hundreds of fans also regularly wear Ditka brand jerseys at almost every Bears game.
After 11 seasons with the Bears, Ditka had some rest before returning to football to coach the Saints for three seasons starting in 1997.
After his stint in New Orleans, Ditka spent nearly 20 years in the media, including NBC and ESPN.
