Mike Ditka, a member of the Professional Football Hall of Fame, is recovering from a heart attack in a Florida hospital.

"Coach Ditka had a mild heart attack earlier this week, doctors have inserted a pacemaker and he's getting a lot better," said Steve Mandell, Ditka's long-time agent, according to ESPN. "He appreciates the surge of support and looks forward to coming back soon."

Rick Tarsitano, of WGN, said Friday for the first time that Ditka had suffered a heart attack earlier this week.

Ditka, 79, had a stellar 12-year career with the Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, winning five Pro Bowl spots, two All Pro nods and a Super Bowl title .

He then took the reins of the Bears head coach in 1982 and scored 106 goals to 62 losses in his 11 seasons at the helm.

The best time of his stay at Windy City came in 1985 when he led the Bears to a 15-1 record during a campaign punctuated by a Super Bowl 20 win over the New England Patriots .
