Mike Ditka, a member of the Professional Football Hall of Fame, is recovering from a heart attack earlier this week, according to his agent.
"Coach Ditka had a mild heart attack early in the week, the doctors inserted a pacemaker and it's much better," said Steve Mandell, Ditka's long-time agent. "He appreciates the surge of support and looks forward to coming back soon."
Ditka, 79, is recovering from a Florida hospital, according to reports.
Super Bowl champion, both player and coach, Ditka is probably best known for his 11 seasons as coach of the Chicago Bears. His 1985 team is considered one of the best defenses of all time, and the Bears offended the New England Patriots in a 46-10 win at Super Bowl XX.
Ditka has led the Bears in the playoffs seven times and has coached in the NFC championship game three times. His 106 wins on the Chicago circuit, only George Halas, were the most memorable in the history of the franchise.
"Iron Mike" Ditka was known for his mustache and fiery temperament. After his coaching career, he worked as an analyst first at NBC, then at ESPN. He has been a member of Sunday Morning Countdown throughout the 2016 season.
Ditka has played for the Bears, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys over a 12-year career and has coached the Bears and New Orleans Saints. He won the Super Bowl VI as a tight player with the Cowboys and was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 1988.
