(WASHINGTON) – The meeting of a North Korean envoy with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has been delayed, leaving greater uncertainty in diplomacy, already stuck on nuclear weapons in the North.
The State Department stated in a short statement On Wednesday, officials would meet later "when our schedules allow." This gave no reason, and the Northern Propaganda Services did not mention the meeting.
After last year's fears of war, North Korea and the United States are trying to revive a stalled diplomacy aimed at ridding the North of its nuclear weapons. There has been much talk of the possibility of success after a meeting in June between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, but in recent months, there are few skeptics who believe that the North will abandon never the weapons that he described necessary to counter a hostile Washington.
Pompeo was due to travel to New York on Thursday to meet with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong Chol.
The South Korean presidential office said the government would later announce its position on the postponed meeting.
The US State Department had previously announced that Stephen Biegun, the United States' supreme envoy for North Korea, was to join Pompeo and Kim to discuss the way forward to achieve what would happen. He calls for "achieving the final and fully verified denuclearization" of North Korea.
Last Friday, the North Korean Foreign Ministry criticized US support for sanctions and hinted that it could resume its nuclear development.
The North Korean statement warned that North Korea could reduce Kim Jong Un's "byongjin" policy to simultaneously advance its nuclear force and economic development if the United States does not change its position. The North has not threatened to abandon the ongoing nuclear talks with Washington.
