CHICAGO • To keep their season alive, even if it lasts a few more hours, the cardinals had the same start as Miles Mikolas gave them, month after month.
Mikolas launched eight exceptional heats and led the Cardinals to a 2-1 win Saturday against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. This victory forces the Dodgers to win Saturday night to take the Cardinals out of the playoff race. If LA loses, the Cardinals enter the final day of the season by attempting to force a 163 game on Monday.
"That's all there is to it," said manager Mike Shildt. "We are big fans of the Giants right now, and I can not wait to play the last day of the season in a meaningful match."
Shildt stated that he was not considering watching the Dodgers-Giants game because he was "out of my control".
He added that he would be "conscious" of the score, however.
Mikolas is tied for the NL lead with his 18th victory.
The right-hander, who finished his first season with the Cardinals, allowed an undeserved race and failed to beat the batter. He has passed 200 heats for the season.
It took the generosity of star Cole Hamels and Matt Carpenter's opportunism to give the Cardinals their first lead since Monday.
Carpenter scored the first leg of the Cardinals game when it arrived via the receiver's interference. He came back from second place on Paul DeJong's single.
