The Milford Health Department will host a flu clinic for all individuals nine years of age and older from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Parsons Gymnasium, 70 West River St. As flu shots will be provided during the Wellness Works! Health Fair, individuals are welcome to visit with health and wellness vendors who are participating in the fair as well.
Flu shots will be available at the clinic to individuals age nine and older. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that all individuals age 6 months and older get a flu vaccination to protect them from developing the flu. This week, the Connecticut Department of Public Health announced the state’s first flu death of the season, in someone older than 65. Though it is still early in the season, roughly 20 people had been hospitalized with the illness as of Oct. 13.
The cost of the seasonal flu shot is $20, payable by cash or check. The Milford Health Department will also offer the Fluzone High Dose to individuals 65 years of age and older. Fluzone High Dose is the first and only influenza vaccine designed specifically for people 65 year of age and older. Persons in this age group have a higher risk for complications from influenza. Flu seasons are unpredictable and can be severe.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) details that each year between 140,000 and 710,000 flu-related hospitalizations and up to 56,000 flu-related deaths occur. It is estimated that 70 percent of the hospitalizations and 85% of the deaths occur in people 65 years of age or older.
The cost of the high dose flu shot is $48.00, payable by cash or check.
