LOS ANGELES – Gio Gonzalez, the starter of the Brewers of Milwaukee Brewers, was forced to leave his start in the fourth game of the National League series after a single run due to a sprained ankle.
In the bottom of the second inning, Gonzalez jumped to hire a player back from Yasiel Puig of the Dodgers and appeared to turn his left ankle during the landing. He was limping around the mound after Puig had made his first strong pitch, leading Craig Counsell, the Milwaukee training staff, to watch him.
Initially, after making two warm – up shots, Gonzalez waved his thumb in the air and tried to stay in the game. However, after returning to the dugout, Counsell and his coach returned to the field before Gonzalez faced the Dodgers' receiver, Austin Barnes, and removed the left-hander from the fight.
Gonzalez told ESPN's Pedro Gomez that he will be removed from the NLCS lineup before the fifth match and replaced by a pitcher. If Gonzalez is retired, he will not be eligible for World Series training if the Brewers advance.
Gonzalez could be seen screaming in his glove as Counsell approached him. Right Recruit Freddy Peralta replaced Gonzalez, making his first appearance in the playoffs.
Gonzalez, 33, has only registered two innings in the first game of the series, as Counsell is leaning on his pen to win the win. This time, however, Gonzalez only lasted one run. He had allowed a race, two hits and two walks at the time of his departure.
The Dodgers led 1-0 when Gonzalez came out.
