LOS ANGELES – Craig Counsell, the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers, broke his National League game chess match with his Dodger counterpart Dave Roberts to a new level at the very beginning of Wednesday's 5-2 loss evening.
Counsell attracted starter Wade Miley after leading the Dodgers leader Cody Bellinger on five courts. Miley is a southpaw, as is Bellinger, but most of the Los Angeles squad was right handed.
Left-handed Brandon Woodruff replaced Miley.
According to Fox Sports, the start was short for Miley, who does not seem to have been hurt. He will start the sixth game in Milwaukee on Friday, while the Brewers will face elimination in the best seven series.
In the fifth game, it was up to Roberts to decide whether he was going to play a few straight lines or whether he was going to empty his bench too early.
The move was slightly surprising for two reasons.
Miley threw five scoreless innings in the second game, giving a much-needed length to a team that relies heavily on her pen.
The Brewers bar also pitched 11 innings and a 2-1 loss to the Dodgers in 13 hours on Tuesday night. Even though it was only two innings below the post-season record, it allowed the goal of the longest run to be scored by a losing worker.
Miley is the second pitcher in post-season history to start a game and face a single hitter. The other was Johnny Cueto, who eliminated the only hitter he faced in the first game of the NL Division Series 2012 before leaving with spasms on the back.
