MINNEAPOLIS – Minneapolis City Council voted Wednesday to approve a temporary site to house hundreds of homeless people living in tents in a camp south of the city center.
The unanimous vote to create a "navigation center" on land owned primarily by the Red Lake Nation came at a meeting of the Emergency Council. .
Most of the camp's inhabitants are American Indians, and the camp was called the "Forgotten Aboriginal Wall" because it is near a wall.
David Frank, director of the city's department of community planning and economic development, said the site's start could be early December, as the current tenant must leave the buildings on the site. live.
"There is no perfect site, it's an emergency," Frank told city council.
Sam Strong, of the Red Lake Nation, said the current tenant on the ground could agree to move out before the lease expires, and if the licensing process is expedited, the site could be ready earlier.
Tribal and city leaders emphasized that the ultimate goal was to find more stable long-term housing solutions for the city's hundreds of homeless people.
Leaders must now work to determine what type of shelter will be on the site – trailers and other forms of heated shelters have been discussed – as well as to determine who will operate it, how it will be funded and coordinating services for residents.
Mayor Jacob Frey thanked the tribal leaders for their help in finding this solution, backed by tribes.
"Our work will continue in partnership with the Aboriginal community and will be guided by several overarching goals: protecting the health and safety of all, providing supportive social services and finding permanent housing options for our homeless communities" in a report .
