Just before the end of the Miss America contest in 2019 Sunday in Atlantic City, some competitors were highlighted during the final round of the preliminary competition.
Although they did not win a prize, they made their mark.
Miss West Virginia, Madeline Collins, received a positive response after answering her question on stage.
The question: What is the biggest problem facing the country?
"Donald Trump is the biggest problem facing our country today," said Collins without hesitation. "Unfortunately, it has caused a lot of division in our country and as long as we can not trust him and the choices he makes for our country, we can not unite."
The crowd at Boardwalk Hall, filled with contest volunteers, titleholders and families of participants, applauded and applauded Collins' response.
Collins, 23, has worked as a dancer for the Walt Disney Co. and is studying for her masters in social work at Columbia University.
The part of the question on stage replaces the swimsuit competition, which the contest abandoned in June. Competitors have 20 seconds to answer each question.
Miss Nevada, Alexis Hilts, a graduate of the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, where she studied biology and political science, was one of the worst moments of the competition. Hilts was asked about the success of the Vegas Golden Knights hockey team, which made the Stanley Cup final in its first season.
Hilts, 23, said the team's performance was important for the city after the October 1 shootout at a Las Vegas music festival that killed 58 people last year.
But here's how she said: "They just have kill he."
Cue a collective grinding of those who watch the competition.
The same evening, Miss Massachusetts, Gabriela Taveras, won the award on stage for an answer in which she spoke of embodying American values during a trip abroad.
Lydia Tremaine, Miss Indiana, won an award for her talent for Frank Sinatra's "That's Life" performance.
The televised Miss America finale will air at 9 pm on Sunday, September 9th on ABC.
