The suspect, Marquis Aaron Flowers, 25, of Brookhaven, was wounded in a shootout with the officers and taken to a Jackson hospital, Strain said. It is about 55 miles north of Brookhaven, a small town in Interstate 55 in Lincoln County.

The officers were declared dead at the King & Daughters Medical Center in Brookhaven, he said.

"This is a problem that police face every day, and it is a cruel reminder of how dangerous the job is," Strain told CNN's WAPT affiliate. "Be thankful, be grateful to all the law enforcement officers you meet, thank them, give them a pat on the back as they are in danger, so that you and I do not have to do it. . "
Governor Phil Bryant said via Twitter"Let's all pray now for the family and loved ones of these fallen heroes, may the good God keep them in his eternal arms."
