JACKSON, Miss. – The death of a 20-month-old girl found stabbed and burned in the furnace of a Mississippi Delta home led on Tuesday to a charge of murder against the child's grandmother, authorities said .

Bolivar County Sheriff, Kelvin Williams Sr., said Carolyn Jones, 48, was charged with first degree murder in the death of Royalty Marie Floyd in the city of Shaw.

"I've been doing police for 25 or 26 years now," Williams told The Associated Press. "It's one of the most horrible things I've seen in law enforcement. The most difficult … is to see a child victim.

He added that the authorities did not have an immediate response to the death of this woman's granddaughter.

Jones appeared for the first time Tuesday night before a judge who fixed the bond at $ 500,000. Jones remained in jail and it was not clear if she had a lawyer who could speak for her.

The sheriff's officials said Floyd was living with Jones while his mother was living elsewhere.

Williams said Jones' brother found the body Monday night and called the police in Shaw, a town of about 2,000 people located about 100 kilometers northwest of Jackson. The police in turn called the sheriff's office and others for help.

Spokesman Warren Strain of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety said investigators were still investigating the cause of the girl's death, as well as the exact time the girl was dead and if it was before her death. placement in the oven. The body of the child was sent to the state's crime lab at Pearl for an autopsy, although Williams said the autopsy results were not yet complete on Tuesday.

Jones was arrested when the police arrived home and were detained all night for questioning, the charges having been prepared, the sheriff said.

"It was the only person who was there with the child at the time," Williams said.

The authorities stated that they did not have immediate information on the circumstances that led to the child's death.

"It's hard to say," Williams said. "We do not know."

The sheriff said the murder charge was brought after consultations with Bolivar County District Attorney, Brenda Mitchell.

Mitchell did not immediately respond to a phone call and an email requesting comments on Tuesday.

The child was found in a beige frame house in the northern part of Shaw. Police bands still surrounded part of the house Tuesday morning, while a stroller, a high chair and a barrel of toys containing a scooter were installed near the sidewalk in front of the house. Williams said that these toys had belonged to the child.

The neighbors said that they seldom saw anyone coming in and out of the house.

"It's a baby. He is an innocent child. She did not ask to be here, "said the neighbor of tomorrow, Williams, at WMC-TV.

A woman in Greenville, about 20 km from Shaw, pleaded guilty to killing her 3-year-old son in a heated oven in March 2011. Terri Robinson pled guilty to the 2012 murder in the death of Tristan Robinson . According to Washington County coroner Methel Johnson, an autopsy revealed that Mr. Robinson had died of heat injury in an electric oven.
