Two police officers died and an injured suspect is in police custody after a shootout early Saturday morning in a small Mississippi town.
Cpl. Zach Moak, 31, and police officer James White, 35, responded to reports that shots were fired around 5am. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety announced an exchange of fire between officers and Marquis Aaron Flowers, 25 years old.
The officers died in a hospital. Flowers, which was found guilty of burglary and having a track record of leading agents in high speed prosecutions, is still hospitalized.
The dead rocked Brookhaven, Missouri, a town of about 12,000 residents, where police often answer calls about gunshots but "nothing happens," said Police Chief Kenneth Collins , at a press conference Saturday.
"But this morning something happened. We lost two of our brave officers. . . . You never know when it's your last day, "said Collins, visibly distraught, to reporters.
"I'm proud of them," he said of his officers. "Two heroes lost their lives this morning."
The Mississippi Department of Public Security is investigating and authorities have not released more details about the death of police officers. Both were carrying body cameras, although the investigators did not say what the images would reveal.
Moak studied auto mechanics before starting work for the Brookhaven Police Department in 2015, Clarion Ledger reported. A Facebook photo shared by the department shows Moak brandishing a note he had written for a cousin's son.
"Cohen, while you sleep, I'll always watch over you," said the note.
White had previously worked for the police and had gone to work in a nearby town. He returned to the Brookhaven Police Service in 2015.
"Our community is strong and will come together as a family. Our deepest condolences and prayers go to the families of the deceased officers, "said Brookhaven Mayor Joe Cox.
