TROY, MB – A mother faces charges after police say she stole painkillers from her terminally ill daughter.
Carol Ballweg was charged with stealing a controlled substance and abuse from a vulnerable person after admitting to stealing her daughter's fentanyl and oxycodone prescriptions for her own use.
According to a press release from the Troy, Missouri Police Department, Ballweg was the primary caregiver for his 20-year-old daughter who was in palliative care.
Troy Family Practice staffers were treating the 20-year-old when they began to suspect that her mother was not giving her the prescribed doses of fentanyl and oxycodone for pain. The release indicated that staff members reported Ballweg to the Department of Health and Higher Services after his orders were filled earlier than necessary several times.
Because of these concerns, his doctor tested his urine for the drug, but the results showed no signs of the drug. They also found that the victim had bed sores.
During the investigation, Ballweg told police that she was opioid dependent and confessed to taking her daughter's medication and using it herself.
She has been charged with four counts of stealing a controlled substance and two counts of abuse against a vulnerable person. His bond was set at $ 100,000.
