The penultimate Thursday of the 2018 regular season offers us a series of eight big league games, including no West Coast games. Here's all you need to know about Thursday's MLB action.
Thursday baseball scores
Red Sox Wins Third Consecutive Title in AL East
Giancarlo Stanton 's Grand Slam in the fourth set seemed to prevent the Red Sox from winning the AL East title at Yankee Stadium, but the Red Sox' s attack was relentless in this one. The star of this event was, again, Mookie Betts, who scored 4 goals in 5 with two doubles, a home track, three points and five RBIs. He also put the nail in the coffin with a three-point shot in the eighth of Aroldis Chapman:
The Yankees made history of the home race in this event, Luke Voit hit his 10th circuit with the Yankees, giving them 12 double-digit players in home runs. It's an MLB record and pretty silly.
Yet 99% of the attention should be focused on the Red Sox. They have never followed the AL East by more than two games all year long. They ran away with the most difficult division of baseball. They were not at least tied for the first time for 11 days, which is amazing. And now, they have a chance not to tie a franchise record.

The Braves beat the Phillies, cut the magic number to four
By entering this series, the Phillies still had a shot outside the division. It was a daunting challenge, but if the Phillies had swept the Braves, the deficit in the division would have been reduced to 1 1/2 with a week before the end. It's hard to see him go without a fight, and the Braves did business on Thursday night.
Now, the advance is 6 1/2 games, the magic number of the Braves is four and the Braves have more than nine games to play. The return of the miracle for the Phillies seems out of the table.
An offense explodes
There was a morning Thursday and it was a real bloodbath at Oakland Coliseum. You can see the score above, so you already knew, but let's go.
The A had 22 shots, including four doubles and three home runs.
The following players had at least three hits: Nick Martini (including a home run), Marcus Semien (including a double and five RBI) and Josh Phegley.
The following players had at least two hits: Matt Chapman (including a double and two RBI), Jed Lowrie, Khris Davis (including a double), Stephen Piscotty (including four RBI and we will return in a second) and Ramon Laureano (including a double) and two RBIs.
Remarkably, the A scored 13 of his 21 races with two outs.
Believe it or not, thanks to the 2 1/2 innings, the Angels led 1-0. The As then scored five in the third, seven in the fourth, six in the sixth, and three in the seventh. More:
At the end of the Angels, it was the worst loss of franchise history.
In the third round, Piscotty's three-point shot, his 26th circuit of the year, sent the game to the track.
Perhaps most importantly here, A's victory moved their magic number to win the second wild card AL up to four. It was a double-digit jump Thursday, because …
The rays have completely melted
The Rays had an 8-3 lead at the bottom of ninth in Toronto and lost. The game was not even going to extra sleeves. The Blue Jays put seven points on the shelves.
The sequence: Double, double, shot, strikethrough, home run, strikethrough, single, home run, home run.
Consecutive circuits with two outs for the rendezvous! It's incredible
Here is Lourdes Gurriel with the game shot:
And Justin Smoak with the appointment:
This loss, paired with A's victory, effectively kills all hope or a miraculous playoff series for the Rays. Being 6 1/2 games with 10 games to play and a magic number of 4 just does not happen. If the Rays go 10-0 the rest of the way, they need the A's to be 3-6 to equalize.
National milestones / match
NL candidate Cy Young Max Scherzer took the ball for the national championships on Thursday night. It allows three points earned in seven innings against the Mets, but let's focus on his withdrawals. He scored 13 Mets, bringing him to 290 on the season and setting a new career record. With at least one start left – only one is expected, but they have a day off and he could kick off the last game on a regular rest – here is the list of the 300 barrage seasons in the joker era:
- Randy Johnson, 372, 2001
- Randy Johnson, 364, 1999
- Randy Johnson, 347, 2000
- Randy Johnson, 334, 2002
- Randy Johnson, 329, 1998
- Curt Schilling, 319, 1997
- Curt Schilling, 316, 2002
- Pedro Martinez, 313, 1999
- Chris Sale, 308, 2017
- Pedro Martinez, 305, 1997
- Clayton Kershaw, 301, 2015
- Curt Schilling, 300, 1998
Man, I've really typed "Randy Johnson" five times without copying-pasting his name. It was stupid.
Anyway, the game would be played 12 times and the Mets dominated the national championships, but Scherzer was the most interesting thing in the game.
