Regarding the power rankings, we reached the All-Star break with some clarity. The dividing line between the Astros and the Red Sox for who is number 1 s narrowed into a ribbon, with three voices going to the Astros and two to the Red Sox. The Yankees are one step behind them, having caught and then lost first place earlier this season. The Cubs are the class of the National League, stationed at No. 4. It's the elite of the MLB, in favor of an American league that could give us their three clubs in the top four as teams of 100 wins – one of which will have to settle for A wild card card game.

That's where start the real fight about the hierarchy. Several teams ranked fifth for a week, but lost that perch as fast as they claimed, with the Nationals, Indians, Brewers and Mariners taking turns over the previous five weeks. This may have finally changed this week, as the Dodgers have moved up to the top of the National League West while moving into the fifth rung in the rankings. Are they ready to do what these other clubs could not do and hang with the best baseball quartet?
The three-point rise of the Dodgers up to # 5 was not the biggest move before the break. The Rockies make their own offer back, going up four squares while they stood in the NL wild-card photo. The Phillies are back in the top 10, moving the Braves here as well as in the NL East standings.
However, not everyone can improve. The Cardinals did not just shoot manager Mike Matheny over the weekend, they also turned down five places in the vote. And the Braves and Mariners lost three places, in the case of the Mariners, putting them within the reach of a team A who climbed to number 11. And with no less than 10 NL teams in the playoff pursuit, he there will surely be a reshuffle in the second half.
This week, our panel of voters is composed of David Schoenfield, Eric Karabell, Tim Kurkjian, Bradford Doolittle and Sarah Langs.

The Astros are on the point where we expected them to enter the break – well above .500 for the second year in a row and were apparently heading for a second consecutive division title. They have not finished first in their division in consecutive seasons since they've won three consecutive years from 1997 to 1999 – which was the only time in the history of the franchise they won consecutive division titles. They have by far the best race differential in the majors. – Sarah Langs, ESPN Statistics and information.

Luis Severino has blossomed in one of the first runners of the MLB. He has already won as many games as he had last season in 11 fewer starts (14). Only 12 starters from the Yankees finished a season with a BPM of less than 2.30 as the earned runs became an official LA statistic in 1913 (min 25 starts). Severino (2.31) could join this group with a good end of season. – McCarthy

After a tumultuous victory in the first half, which seems to have gone bad rather than successful, the Cubs have the best record in the NL at the break of the star game. Chicago allowed Kris Bryant to return Wednesday, which allowed the team to be the healthiest since the start of the season. The biggest question facing the Cubs in the second half: what will bring Yu Darvish? He made only eight starts in the first half and posted a 4.95 ERA. Kenneth Woolums, ESPN Stats & informations

While the Dodgers can thank for their return to first place the unexpected performances of Max Muncy, Ross Stripling, Enrique Hernandez and Matt Kemp, they can also rejoice in the rebound of Kenley Jansen. The closest tied for his 27th stop for the Czechs on Sunday, and since April he's clocked a 1.47 ERA and a 0.76 ERA that looks like his previous three dominant seasons (1.81 and 0.73). And even though his strikeout rate has dropped, he is giving almost no more power, only four more moves since April. Christina Kahrl, ESPN.com

Despite the ugly performance of the Indians in the first half, the Tribe reached the break on all the good marks this weekend: Jose Ramirez tied at the top of the MLB with 29 Trevor Bauer delivered another gem on the mound and Cody Allen came close to Sunday's win with his 20th stop. The Indians still need to see Andrew Miller come back in good health and perhaps negotiate an agreement to make sure their relief woes do not haunt their attempt to return to the World Series, but with an easy division they can keep their eyes on October. – Kahrl

The break from the stars comes at the right time for the Brewers. After spending 75 days in first place in the first half of the season, they have now lost six consecutive games early in the season, including a five-game loss to the Pirates. Given the circumstances, it's hard not to think back to last season, when Milwaukee spent 69 days at the top of NL Central, only to see the Cubs win the division for a second consecutive season. Even though Zack Greinke sees his fast ball speed velocity drop below 90 mph, it shows that it does not matter while he delivers another excellent season for Snakes. He has the third lowest walking rate in the Netherlands, he still hits more than one batter per innings, and his 11 quality starts lead the team. With the return of Patrick Corbin and the return of Robbie Ray to last year 's standard, Greinke has been the anchor of rotation that he has been signing. – Kahrl

The bullpen still has some question marks, but there is no doubt that it was a successful first half for the Phillies. They are in first place at the break for the first time since 2011, which was also the year of their most recent playoff appearance. Aaron Nola entered the conversation of the elite NL pitchers, with a 2.30 ERA and .91 WAP. On Saturday, he scored his 500th career win in just 480 innings, the least 500 career innings for any Phillies pitcher and the least 500K innings with the Phillies for a pitcher, according to research from Elias Sports. – Langs

Many spent most of the first half waiting for the Mariners to return to earth. Instead, they head for the All-Star break at the pace to win over 95 games and, more importantly, online to break the longest active drought of the playoffs in the major leagues. Arriving at the Mariners' just three-game break in pursuit of AL's second wild card, the A's are channeling their 2012 surprise season when they arrived as pretenders earlier than expected. Winning has a way of changing the conversation because Grand Chief Billy Beane is talking about being a buyer by the deadline – their rotation could use the help – and trying to keep Jed Lowrie (player Autonomous this winter) and DH Khris Davis (who reaches the free agency after 2019). – Kahrl

Braves may have stumbled in the break, but the Phillies did not really get away. Since July 3, Atlanta is 3-8, but only half a game remain in the division. The Atlanta attack has struggled lately, scoring just 3.4 points per game in its last 11 minutes. The potential exhaustion of Ozzie Albies is something to look into in the second half. The first half did not unfold as planned by the Nationals. After being a popular choice to reach the World Series and pretty much a consensus to win their division, they are in third place. It's the latest since 2013, a year in which they finally finished 86-76 and missed the playoffs. Blake Snell earned his star status with an outstanding start to the season, posting a 2.27 ERA in 20 starts. His 12 wins have already overshadowed his career mark by entering the year (11). His fastball showed an increase in velocity and deception, as it has caused a 22 percent drop in fluctuations this season (up 17 percent in its first two years). Snell has not yet launched more than 130 innings in a season, so all eyes will be on the young beginner to see how he will hold out in the second half of the year. – McCarthy

The Cardinals crowned their first half-day early by shooting director Mike Matheny on Saturday night. Scooter Gennett and Eugenio Suarez both have career years, both are in the middle of their bonuses and come with several years of control of the team (Suarez is signed until 2024). If the Reds decide to expand Gennett, they have a core of Gennett, Suarez and Joey Votto to build around.
