Hunters can help
monitor deer populations in northwestern and northeastern Indiana for chronic diseases
Disease-causing disease (CWD) by voluntarily submitting harvested deer to DNR
for testing during the 2018-19 deer season.

The DNR Division of
Fish & Wildlife has established a central surveillance zone for the MDC in Newton
County and Lake County, south of the Ind. 2. In these regions, the MNR hopes
sample as many deer harvested by hunters as possible from September 29 to December 30.

Enhanced CWD
surveillance zones have also been identified in Jasper County, Lake County
(North Ind. 2) and the counties of LaPorte, Porter, Pulaski and Starke at
Northwest Indiana, as well as in Steuben County, northeastern Indiana.

surveillance
involves the collection and testing of the lymph nodes of the harvested hart's neck
by hunters and voluntarily submitted for evaluation.

CWD is a serious
neurological disease affecting white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk and moose.
The fatal disease is directly transmitted by bodily fluids such as feces,
saliva, blood or urine or indirectly through the environmental contamination of
soil, plants, food or water. MDC found in white-tailed deer
in several Midwestern states near Indiana, including Michigan, Illinois,
and Wisconsin. MDC has not been detected in Indiana.

To the northwest
Indiana, the DNR will collect samples throughout the season with the help
processors, taxidermists and businesses. During the weekends
On September 29, biologists will be stationed at Phil's Truck Stop (3347 Ind.
Lake Village) and Jay's Deer Processing (2651 Clifford Road in
Valparaiso) to collect samples for the MDC test.

During the week,
hunters may submit samples for CWD testing to local fish and wildlife areas by:
appointments, during normal business hours. In addition, partnership
processors and taxidermists will work with MNR to secure samples of CWD
are collected for customers wishing to participate in surveillance.

To North-east
Indiana, DNR biologists to collect voluntary samples for MDC detection tests
deer harvested in Steuben County at PWAF River FWA by
appointments, during normal business hours. Additional locations and hours of
the operation will be available from the opening weekend of the firearms season.
