Jerusalem (AFP) – A Belgian model has outraged the rabbi of the western wall of Jerusalem with a photo of his nude pose on a roof overlooking the Jewish shrine.

The photo, published in the Belgian newspaper HLN, shows 26-year-old Mariano Papen leaning naked on a deck chair, face raised in the sun.

Behind and below his followers can be seen at the ancient wall of the Old City, the most sacred site where Jews can pray. This photo was condemned by Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz in a statement, an "embarrassing incident, serious and saddening, which undermines the sanctity of the place and the feelings of those who visit it".

Last year Papen was detained for 24 hours in Egypt after posing nude in front of the Karnak Temple, according to his website, which is a travelogue of his naked poses shot around the world.

The Western Wall is adjacent to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, sacred to both Muslims and Jews.

Jews believe that the wall is the last vestige of the biblical Jewish temple.
