Modification of the games in Florida opposed by the dolphins of Miami

Florida voters on Tuesday approved an amendment that removed the power to expand gambling, including sports betting.

Amendment 3 states that casino games can only be approved through a state-wide initiative presented on the ballot by a citizen petition. Exceptions were made for Indian reserve casinos.

The Walt Disney Co. and the Seminole Tribe of Indians, which owns casinos in the Fort Lauderdale and Tampa areas, are among the advocates of the measure.

Opponents included equestrian and canine access operators. They accused Disney and the Seminoles of not wanting competition to attract tourists. They said that the decision to allow or not the casinos should be left to the voters of each county.

Other opponents of the amendment said that it "could potentially close the door" on the legalization of sports betting in the state.

The Miami Dolphins tweeted on Monday to voice concerns over Amendment 3, saying that if the law were passed, it would "block any possibility of sports betting in Florida". The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also lobbied against the amendment, as did online betting sites such as FanDuel and DraftKings.

The measure was placed on the ballot by petition.
