Moldovan President Igor Dodon was injured in a traffic accident north-west of the capital Chisinau.

Local media said the accident had occurred when an oncoming truck had overtaken a vehicle and crashed against the presidential convoy near the town of Straseni.

One of the cars of the convoy overturned. President Dodon was taken to the hospital.

It is said that he suffered only slight injuries, but according to local media, his mother is in serious condition.

The 43-year-old has led the former Soviet Republic since December 2016.

Images posted on social networks after the accident on Sunday show the wreckage of a car at the side of the road.

The accident comes just hours after the death of Gennady Gagulia, Prime Minister of Abkhazia, a Russian-backed republic that broke away from Georgia in the 1990s.
