Monday morning hangover: what's next for Derrick Lewis after the loss to Daniel Cormier at UFC 230?

Another weekend of fights took place, the UFC 230 destroyed the roof of Madison Square Garden last Saturday (November 3, 2018) in New York, NY.

Chris Weidman, who lost in the round of 16 against Ronaldo Souza in the third and final round, was beaten for the fourth time in his last five outings (see again here). And David Branch, who was knocked out by Jared Cannonier at the middleweight (relive it).

But what fighter suffers from the worst after-fight hangover, now just days away from the show?

Derrick Lewis.

It was an unexpected opportunity that Lewis (or his agent) received the call, informing him of the possibility of fighting for the heavyweight title just days after canceling the lockout. Alexander Volkov in a victory of Hail Mary. And despite his constant reminders that he was not interested (or ready) to play the title, you knew that "Black Beast" just did not want to say no.

Especially since they were paying him money like a stripper.

With all the money put aside, Lewis was not about to miss this opportunity. After all, he was just about the most deserving big man (although Curtis Blaydes could argue his case) given his rankings. In addition, when you accumulate the power that he has in both fists, any fight is win if a shot is clean.

But as Daniel Cormier often says, the mixed martial arts (MMA) game has levels, and "DC" has shown why it stands out from all the others. As might be expected, Cormier – the former Olympic wrestler – was found with Lewis in the wrestling department, taking the big man at will, although "Black Beast" was managed to get up several times.

But it was Daniel's fighting spirit and his skill set that won him the fight, as he did not let Lewis unpack his opponent, keeping him close to the others, and defending himself well. Once on the ground, "DC" seemed easy, tapping on the hooks and sinking into a rear narrowing constricting the air to force the cock.

And just like that, Cormier made history by becoming the only UFC fighter to defend titles in two separate divisions. He also remained unbeaten at 265 pounds. Cormier will now either begin a trilogy battle against Jon Jones or an intense clash against Brock Lesnar.

As for Lewis, his future is still very promising.

At age 33, Derrick still seems to have a lot to fight, assuming his back problems are resolved. It's as entertaining as anybody in the cage, and once he picks up the microphone, forget that. That said, the competition at 265 pounds is still quite difficult.

And he is about to become a lot more difficult.

As for who he should fight next, a clash against Alistair Overeem seems about right. "Reem" has just lost two defeats against Francis Ngannou and Curtis Blaydes, who should face the situation in a few weeks. Alistair needs a signature to get back into the mix, and choosing another one on "Black Beast" would do the trick.

For Derrick, facing Overeem is a chance to redeem himself, as it is a fight that will probably not involve any attempt to withdraw (we hope). Also, in the field, there are not many names, if any, that make more sense.
