The battle for the biggest and most daring distribution of the spring of 2019 continues. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, who have never done anything in half, have recruited some of the biggest names in the world for a show devoted to #DGDNA. There were Italian icons led by actress Monica Bellucci, who opened the collection in a polka dot number followed by a series of mannequins. Eva Herzigova took part in a bulky evening look – who says you have to wear ball gowns for the last time? – Carla Bruni is disguised as Golden Brocade and Isabella Rossellini has emerged with her elegant family: her son Robert, her daughter Elettra Wiedemann and Ronin, her brand new grandson, who debuted at Fashion Week.
Rather than matching outfits and a pose photo shoot, each woman was introduced as an individual. Dolce has always been a big family and each member of the group was well represented in the eclectic group gathered for this collection. With a wide range of ages, sizes and featured body types, the show surpassed the age-old social media-centric atmosphere that defined the previous casts. Maye Musk, a seventy-year-old woman, played Tess McMillan's new face, while pop star Austin Mahone shared the stage with Karen Elson and Brazil's Bruna Marquezine.
Naturally, there were also some surprises. From the presence of international musicians such as Jessica Jung and actress and Thai-style star Davika Hoorne – both of whom have taken their first steps for the brand – until the use of real couples, such as Mariano Di Vaio and Eleonora Brunacci Di Vaio and Evandro Soldati and Yasmin Brunet. Establishing a new DNA for the home, one where everyone is invited to the party, Dolce and Gabbana and their casting director, Decio Santos, have made their collection a difficult act to follow.
