MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) – An Amerindian tribe in Montana has filed a lawsuit against companies that produce and distribute opioid analgesics, claiming that the substances pose a risk to public health in the Cheyenne Reserve in the north of the country.
The lawsuit alleges that companies misinterpreted the risks of addiction and marketed the drugs as a solution for the treatment of chronic pain, which resulted in an increase in the number of prescriptions. The lawsuit alleges that drug addiction causes the tribe to spend more money on the welfare of the child, health care, drug treatment services and law enforcement. .
KECI-TV reports that the complaint was filed in federal court in Missoula on October 26.
Continuing companies manufacture and distribute powerful painkillers such as oxycodone, fentanyl and morphine.
The Blackfeet tribe filed a similar lawsuit in August, and Montana is one of dozens of states that have also sued pharmaceutical companies.
