The best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated every year, but good health habits can often help stop the spread of germs and prevent diseases like the flu. Good health habits include:
- Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing and before eating. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer (minimum 60% alcohol) will help if soap and water are not available.
- Avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth. These are places where germs can easily enter the body.
- Avoid close contact with sick people. When you are sick, stay away from others to protect them from illness.
- Monitor yourself and your family for fever symptoms that include chills, headache, sore throat, cough, body aches, and vomiting or diarrhea.
- If you are sick, stay at home without work, at school, or in other public places until you feel well.
