More than 100 kilograms of ground beef recalled for possible E. coli contamination

FORT MORGAN, ColoUPDATE: Cargill Meat Solutions announced an expansion of the ground beef recall announced in August, according to a press release from the US Department of Agriculture released Wednesday. This recall is due to possible E. coli contamination.

The extended recall concerns products made from the part of the mandrel of the carcass that may be contaminated by Escherichia coli O26, said the USDA.

Approximately 132,606 pounds of ground beef were recalled. The USDA said that one death and 17 illnesses suspected to be related to Cargill products have been reported.

Cargill Meat Solutions is recalling more than 25,000 pounds of ground beef products due to possible E. coli contamination.

Beef products were produced on August 16 and include 10-pound tubes or "EXCEL 93/7 Fine-Ground Ground Beef" sticks with a date of consumption or freezing prior to September 5. 16, 2018, the US Department of Agriculture reported.

The meat has been shipped to warehouses in Colorado and California, the agency said.

The USDA urges anyone who bought this meat to throw it or return it to the store where they bought it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a potentially fatal bacterium, E. coli, can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps and vomiting. Most people who contract E. coli recover within a week, but sometimes people who are very young or older may develop kidney disease related to the bacteria.
