Prescott said 227 cold-weathered turtles have been recovered in the Gulf of Maine since Wednesday, but only 54 have survived. Mass Audubon, the largest nonprofit organization for nature conservation in Massachusetts, regularly patrols beaches during this time of year looking for turtles in the cold state, a declared Prescott.
But it was much more than what they expected, he said.
"It was too cold," said Prescott. "Everything was slimy yesterday morning, some are small, they quickly froze."
Most sea turtles migrate between areas where they can find food and areas where they can give birth, and generally to warmer waters, according to SEE Turtles, a conservation tourism project aimed at protecting sea turtles .
Prescott told CNN that he attributes turtle death to global warming.
"Before 2010, the Gulf of Maine was too cold for sea turtles to come in," he said.
