The products were made from the mandrel portion of the carcass, reports the USDA. They were produced and packaged on June 21, 2018. You can view a complete list of the products recalled here.
All products subject to the recall bear the EST establishment number. 86R "inside the inspection mark of the USDA. They were shipped to retail outlets in the United States.
On August 16, 2018, FSIS was informed of an investigation into E. coli related diseases. FSIS, CDC, and state public health and agriculture partners determined that the likely source of disease was raw ground beef. The epidemiological investigation has identified 17 diseases and one death, with dates of onset between 5 July and 25 July 2018.
FSIS has identified Cargill Meat Solutions ground beef products following further investigation into a separate recall, in which ground beef products were recalled as part of the outbreak of E. coli O26. FSIS found that affected patients were consuming ground beef products from various retail stores provided by Cargill Meat Solutions.
According to the USDA, most people infected with E. coli O26 develop diarrhea and vomiting (often bloody) and the infection is usually diagnosed by stool removal. Most recover within a week, but it is possible (but rare) to develop a more serious infection.
FSIS is concerned that some of the contaminated product may be frozen and in consumers' freezers. The USDA urges you not to eat the products, if you have them. Throw them away or return them to the place where you bought them.
As a reminder, FSIS must always safely prepare raw meat products (fresh and frozen) and consume only ground beef cooked at a temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. To be sure, you must use a food thermometer that measures the internal temperature. Always wash your hands after handling raw meat, poultry and eggs – this can significantly reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Finally, be sure to wash your counters and sinks with hot soapy water.
