According to the Butte County Public Health Department, more than 140 fire camp evacuees located in four different shelters have had symptoms of norovirus due to an outbreak, while 41 currently have them.
Twenty-one people staying at the Chico District Church; 31 in Oroville, Church of the Nazarene; 9 at the Butte County Fairgrounds and one at the East Avenue Church in Chico had symptoms Thursday, according to a press release from the Butte County Public Health Department.
About 179 people stay at the local church; 352 are in the church of Oroville; There are 142 at Butte County Gridley and 200 at East Avenue Chico, the statement said.
According to Lisa Almaguer, spokesman for the Department of Health, at the Nazarene Church, some people stay inside and others in their car.
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can cause diarrhea, vomiting and other stomach problems, fever and body aches.
Shelter workers separate sick people from healthy people, giving them a separate bathroom and sanitizing them all the time, Almaguer said.
The epidemic has spread since Wednesday, when the Ministry of Health announced that evacuees in two shelter centers were showing symptoms.
"The number of sick people is increasing every day," said the Ministry of Health. "Twenty-five people went to the hospital for medical support. The staff serving the shelters was also sick. "
The Enloe Medical Center in Chico visited several reception centers for norovirus patients who were "critically ill," said Susie Benson, head of infection prevention and control at the hospital.
Inpatients are treated with fluids for dehydration, said Benson. County medical teams are in shelters to assess patients to determine if they have norovirus symptoms or only Noro-like symptoms, Benson said.
