More than two dozen people were injured Sunday after a bus went through a highway separator and rushed into a 405 passenger car aboard in Los Angeles.

The accident occurred around 13 hours. local time and sent 25 people to the hospital, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Authorities reported that five adults between the ages of 30 and 88 were in serious condition.

The other 20 people suffered only minor injuries.

It was not clear if the wounded were all on the bus or in the car.

According to ABC station Los Angeles, KABC, the bus was carrying 37 passengers during a religious event at the Forum in Inglewood.

Debris was scattered on Highway 405 after the accident.

"Incidents on a highway are extremely dangerous not only for those involved, but also for first responders and witnesses," said the Los Angeles fire department in a statement. "When they arrived, firefighters found debris scattered on both sides of the highway, causing an immediate and complete closure."

Forty patients in total were assessed at the scene, but only 25 were sent to the hospital.
