Health officials ask people to use an insect repellent and to dress up long sleeves and pants, especially when they come out of the twilight until dawn.
"While it may be embarrassing, taking steps to protect yourself and your loved ones is the best thing we can all do to avoid becoming very ill," said Gina Bare, County Environmental Health Specialist. from Boulder County, in a statement. "Our high temperatures and the newly created rainy weather created the ideal environment for mosquito breeding."
The Vector Index – a measure based on the number of mosquitoes carrying the virus and the total number of mosquitoes in the area – was 0.13 for Erie and Louisville and 0.11 for Longmont.The Department of Health recommends an emergency spraying when the vector index reaches 0.75.
