BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. (WNDU) A mother and her five children died after a motel fire in Berrien County.
The fire started around 1:45 am Saturday at Cosmo Extended Stay in Sodus Township. . The motel is located at 2699 S. M-139 Hwy
The adult victim was identified as Kiarre Curtis, 26 years old.
The five children who died in the fire are between 2 and 10 years old. years. They were identified as Marquise Thompson, 10 years old; Gerome Randolph, 7 years old; Samuel Curtis, age 5; Savod Curtis, 4 years old; and Avery Curtis, 2.
Kiarre Curtis' husband, Samuel Curtis, 36, and a 1-year-old boy escaped from the motel. They were among the four guests in the hotel treated for possible smoke inhalation.
Four first responders were also treated and released.
At the time of the fire, 27 of the motel rooms were occupied.
The American Red Cross of Southwest Michigan opened an emergency shelter at Upton Middle School at 800 Maiden Lane. The Red Cross says the shelter will remain open for as long as needed. People affected by the fire can call the Red Cross at 269-985-3574
About 90% of the rooms were damaged by smoke, fire or water.
The Michigan Police Fire Department assists the Berrien sheriff. Office to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
