A suburban Philadelphia mother has been charged with criminal homicide in the alleged case of the death of her two-year-old son.
Bucks County authorities said Tuesday they accused Jennifer Clarey, 42, of poisoning Mazikeen Clarey with two prescription drugs.
The authorities said that the lab tests on the boy's cup – which prosecutors had put under the cover of a child-resistant lid – had revealed toxic levels of Vicodin. They say that toxic levels of the drug have also been found in his blood.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, on August 25, police were called to Clarey's home in Tullytown for a health checkup.
When a social worker knocked, Clarey appeared drunk and did not cooperate. The police were called and when the authorities had access to the house, the body of the child was found on a bed. Blood covered the bedding.
"The child showed no sign of life, was stiff and cold to the touch," reads in the criminal complaint. It is believed that the boy was dead for hours before the arrival of the police.
Clarey was found with injuries apparently inflicted on her wrists. Mazikeen's brain would have been "swollen and dark", a sign compatible with a drug overdose.
Many neighbors, including Dawn Dunlap, told ABC that they had asked for a check after noting that Clarey was out of character.
"Me and my other neighbor, we discussed it and said," You know what, it's something we have to do, "said Dunlap.
Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub told ABC 6 that when authorities reviewed Mazikeen's medical history, they could not find any prescription for Vicodin.
"It's simple and simple, it was a murder," District Attorney Matthew Weintraub said at a press conference.
Prosecutors say Clarey has been arrested and the bail has been denied.
