Warner Bros. is currently developing a film adaptation of the award-winning musical at the Tony Awards.
First, it was a book. Then a movie to success. Then it became a musical on Broadway. And now, the musical version will be adapted to the film.
The color Purple, Alice Walker's novel turned into a drama by Steven Spielberg and later into a Broadway musical, is back on the big screen. Warner Bros. develops a musical version for the film of the winner of the Tony Award.
Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones and Scott Sanders, who produced the Broadway version, will produce the musical on the big screen. Spielberg is also back, joining the group as a producer.
The film and theatrical productions adapted Walker's 1982 novel. The story of the triumph over adversity follows the story of a black woman named Celie, who grows up in extreme poverty in the southern United States and undergoes harsh treatment on the part her stepfather, her husband and other people, which puts her faith to the test. Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction and became the first black woman to do so. Whoopi Goldberg played the role of Celie in Spielberg's film, which won 11 Oscar nominations; he won none. Winfrey, who made his film debut, was also nominated.
The musical, with a play by playwright Marsha Norman, as well as music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, was premiered on Broadway in 2005, winning 11 Tony nominations. He did not win the Best Musical Award, but 2016 lead actress Cynthia Erivo won two Tonys, including Best Musical Awakening, as well as a Grammy and an Emmy. The musical has also changed the demographics of Broadway attendance, with Purple attracting 50% of its audience from the black community, as opposed to normal one-digit numbers. The musical brought in more than $ 350 million, thanks to the many traveling versions circulating in the country.
"We are very excited to be creating a film that reflects the heart and emotions we found in telling this generational story on stage," said Sanders. "It's an incredibly powerful drama that needs to be shared."
The project is in its infancy and will look for a writer. No decision on the casting has been taken and it has not yet been determined whether Erivo, who now has a promising career in screens, has such films as Widows, would be star.
