The MTV 2018 EMAs traveled to Bilbao, Spain on Sunday, November 4, with host Hailee Steinfeld and a large number of international artists. The show, which has just been released two hours later, is making good progress. 12. Muse – "Pressure"
This is often the lowest point of a TV series rewarded with off-site prerecorded performance – and this is the case for EMAs when Muse played "Pressure" at San Mames Stadium in a pre-recorded format. 10. Marshmello with Anne-Marie and Bastille – "Friends" and "happier"
While Marshmello tickled the ivories (which was no mean feat under this helmet), Anne-Marie sang their charming "Friends" collaboration. After that, the masked DJ went to Bastille to knock out "Happier", his rock anthem influenced by EDM. He played percussion at the end, but before that, he had a bit of a wander while Bastille was playing, which was … a choice.
9. Jason DeRulo x David Guetta and Nicki Minaj – "Goodbye"
Who would have thought we could have heard Andrea Bocelli through the velvety hoses of Jason DeRulo at EMA 2018? Opening with a piece of opera from "Time to Say Goodbye" before reappearing in a striking costume, DeRulo came down a flight of stairs and exhibited a fanciful footwork during a highly theatrical performance alongside David Guetta for their "Goodbye" collab – which naturally gave Nicki Minaj for his fiery verse. There was a lot going on, but not everything was added.
8. Jack & Jack – "Rise"
Jack & Jack make their way through their single "Rise" which, as it should, has seen them rise in the air and turn around like P! Nk x 2 at the EMA. But they managed to put a distinctive touch on the airborne performance trope; the circular / screen scene below them blinked like a vortex, so as they were spinning in the air above him, they seemed to be crossing some kind of bluish wormhole. In the end, they were joined by a coterie of fans who helped boost the already energetic performance of the so-so-so song.
7. Bebe Rexha – "I'm a mess"
For the most ambitious performance of the night, Bebe Rexha appealed to nearly a hundred dancers for a performance of "I'm a Mess" who took her from a bath to the heights of eye chorea inspired by Busby Berkeley. She may have sung to be a mess, but the number interpreted expertly was anything but naïve.
6. Alessia Cara – "Trust My Lonely"
Dressed in an oversized suit at the David Byrne, Alessia Cara released her inflatable single "Trust My Lonely", backed by colorful images that exploded around her. Cara is an excellent live singer. She dominated the scene discreetly and confidently during the island-colored song.
5. Rosalía – "Malamente"
Spanish singer Rosalía, accompanied by supportive dancers dressed in bright visors, presented a striking visual performance in her home country during the EMAs. If the American public does not know her very well, it will probably change depending on how she owns the scene – not to mention her five Latin Grammy nominations.
4. Hailee Steinfeld – "Back to life"

2. Halsey – "Without me"
Halsey had the conceptual idea at the EMA, running the sentimental "Without Me" while she was chained in a glass cage. So it was a wise choice to let her open the MTV EMAs, even if it meant that everyone who followed had to perform in the shadow of Queen's. After delivering "Good Form" in great form as sparks rained, Little Mix came out for their Nicki collab "Woman Like Me", marking the first time Minaj and the British quartet were playing together.
