FLINT, Michigan – A $ 480,000 donation from the Musk Foundation will allow schools in Flint, Michigan, to install ultraviolet water filtration systems in drinking fountains.
Schools in the Flint community announced Friday that the billionaire foundation of Elon Musk's technology had been poured out as the district strove to find a long-term solution to the water crisis, tainted by lead.
The district says the systems will disinfect lead and bacteria from fountain water pipes. The systems should be installed in the 12 schools and the district administrative building by the end of January.
The lead leached from old water pipes in homes and buildings after Flint began using the Flint River water in 2014 without adding corrosion control chemicals. Flint returned to the Detroit Water System in 2015.
