Muslim groups raise funds for victims after firing a Pittsburgh synagogue

Just one day after mass shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue, two Muslim groups raised tens of thousands of dollars for the victims and their families.

The non-profit organizations Celebrate Mercy and MPower Change on Saturday created a crowdfunding campaign for victims of the Tree of Life Synagogue on LaunchGood, a Muslim crowdsourcing site. The campaign exceeded its initial fundraising goal of $ 25,000 in six hours and then its new goal of $ 50,000 within 24 hours, according to the page. On Sunday afternoon, he raised nearly $ 80,000 from more than 1,800 donors.

Celebrate Mercy has announced that she will immediately transfer funds to the Pittsburgh Islamic Center, which will work with Tree of Life to send the funds to the victims so that they support the medical and funeral expenses.

The campaign organizers did not immediately respond to a CBS News call.

GoFundMe has also created a certified charity campaign for victims in Pittsburgh, which has raised more than $ 400,000 to date to reach a million dollar goal.

The Anti-Defamation League said that the unleashing of Pittsburgh was the deadliest attack on Jews in American history. The shooting left 11 dead and six wounded, including four policemen, after armed suspect Robert Bowers ambushed the camp on Saturday with an AR-15 rifle and three handguns.

An affidavit said that after his surrender, Bowers told an officer: "I just want to kill Jews" and that they "were committing genocide for my people."

In the weeks leading up to the shoot, Bowers antisemitic content eagerly posted on the Gab social network, including threats, Holocaust denials and a wide range of conspiracy theories.

Bowers faces 29 federal indictments for shooting.
