CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WTHR) – Happy Fourth of July! Independence Day is the most popular hot dog day of the year. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC), Americans are eating 150 million hot dogs that day – enough to expand from Washington, DC to Los Angeles more than five times.
But it is not only today. According to the NHDSC, Memorial Day to Labor Day is the hot dog season. And Americans eat 7 billion hot dogs during this period – over 800 per second.
Americans clearly like hot dogs, but when it comes to toppings, there is always a debate. Yellow or spicy mustard? Any vegetables or just condiments? And for the sake of Chicago, KETCHUP DOES NOT LOOK FOR DOGS, is not it?
JJ's Red Hots love to get involved in the debate every fourth of July with his annual Top Ten Hot Toppings list. JJ's is a restaurant focused on hot dogs in North Carolina. Although part of the list could probably be attributed to regional preference, it has been featured on the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives food webs, so it has some credibility.
The restaurant publishes the list since 2013 by collecting data from the previous one. Here is the list of favorites:
- mustard
- Chile
- Relish
- Sauerkraut
- Onions
- cheese
- Bacon
- Tomatoes
- Salsa
- Ketchup [19659016AlorsquelesChicagoainsetlesfansdehot-dogsdeChicagoseréjouirontdelamoutardeentêteilyasansaucundouteencorebeaucoupdeproduitsàbasedetomatessurleurschiensavecdestomatesdelasalsaetduketchup
