We love our technology, so maybe it's natural to hope that elsewhere in the universe, another life form also hangs on to brilliant tools, and maybe in a way that we could spot from a distance.

Scientists have been searching for signatures of these civilizations for decades, until now in vain. But this week, NASA is organizing a conference dedicated to rethinking the quest: NASA wants scientists to assess how far the search for technosignatures has come and what are the most promising possibilities for the future.

You can watch this conversation taking place live today (September 26 – September 28) on Space.com, courtesy of NASA TV.

The presentations will include discussions on the different types of technosignatures, how different types of technologies can take them into account and what other developments, such as the rise of big data in the field. The workshop includes many speakers who lead the search for extraterrestrial intelligence for decades.

And if listening is not enough, several panelists of the conference will participate in a Reddit Ask Me Anything tomorrow (September 27) at 13h. EDT (1700 GMT).
