NASA Mars Lander prepares for Bumpy Landing

The InSight probe is scheduled to land on Monday, as long as it can prevent it from crashing hard on the Martian surface. A successful landing means a sudden slowdown of 12,000 to 5 mph with parachutes. But the weak atmosphere of the red planet makes it particularly difficult: only 40% of landings are successful. Once parked on flat land and extended solar panels, InSight will deploy a thermal probe and seismometer to study the planet's geographical features and detect "earthquakes".
