NASA is officially committed to meeting a development schedule that will lead to the first flight of its X-59 Quiet Supersonic Technology (QueSST) aircraft in just three years.

The X-59 QueSST is designed to reduce the volume of a sonic boom to that of a slight thud, as it is understood. The supersonic aircraft will be flown over some US communities to measure public perception of noise – data that will help regulators set new rules for supersonic overland commercial air travel.
The development management of the X-59 QueSST is part of the low-flying demonstration project, which is part of NASA's aeronautical integrated mission aviation systems program.
