An exchange of gunfire Friday night in a building near Bordeaux has made a death and a police officer shot, officials said.

Police said officers were called to the Overlook Ridge apartments around 22:30. Friday after receiving reports of gunfire in the area.

The Tennessee investigation bureau, charged with investigating the shooting, identified the deceased man as Sershawn Martez Dillon, 31 years old.

The Nashville police officer injured in the shooting was Samuel Galluzzi, 24, who had been working at the department for two years. He is in a stable condition after being shot in the thigh and ankle. Surgery will be needed on Saturday, police said.

The two officers who, according to Metro police, reportedly fired, were Inspector Zachary Ronan and Constable John Petriello.

The gunman died after being transported to the Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Officers who arrived at the compound near Buena Vista and Clarksville Pikes saw a person who met the gunman's description in the initial report, said Josh Devine, a TBI spokesman.

The person the police saw also matched the description of a suspect in a "flogging" incident earlier in the evening, said Devine.

The man went to a unit in the apartment complex, and the police eventually thought that the man was not living or had no reason to be in this unit, he said.

"For reasons that were still under investigation, the situation worsened and resulted in gunfire between at least three of the officers and the subject," Devine said.

At least three officers exchanged fire with the man in the apartment, said Devine.

The shooter died on the scene.

The injured officer was rushed to hospital with a gunshot wound in his leg and had to survive.

It was not known immediately who fired the shots that injured the policeman or killed the gunman.
