The National Council of Churches on Wednesday called for the removal of Brett Kavanaugh's candidacy from the Supreme Court, citing his behavior at last week's Senate hearing and his "political record".
"We think he's disqualified from this lifetime appointment and must retire immediately," the Washington-based council said in a statement.
According to its website, the organization represents more than 40 million people and 38 Christian denominations.
During the hearing before the Judiciary Committee of the Senate, the Council wrote: "Kavanaugh J. was extremely biased and disrespectful to some members of the committee and thus demonstrated that he was # 39; had neither the temperament nor the essential character of a member of the highest court of the country. "
The council also accused Kavanaugh of lying under oath.
"In addition, his testimony before the Judicial Committee contained several false statements and some falsehoods," he said.
The council did not list specific lies, but several of Kavanaugh's comments at the hearing do not agree.
The candidate stated that he "had never attended a rally like the one described by Dr. Ford in his allegation". However, the calendars he presented for his defense clearly showed that Kavanaugh had staged rallies in a manner surprisingly similar to that portrayed by accuser Christine Blasey Ford.
He also stated that he never drank beer "to the point of losing consciousness". Other people who knew him in high school and at university described Kavanaugh at the time as a hard-working and hard-working drinker.
In his statement on Wednesday, the National Council of Churches also spoke about Mr. Kavanaugh's professional history.
"Judge Kavanaugh's judicial and political record is troubling with regard to the right to vote, justice for men and women, health care, the rights of persons with disabilities and the protection of the environment", said the council. "This leads us to believe that he can not be an impartial judge in cases that will not fail to appear before him [Supreme] Court."
Last week, America Magazine also called for the withdrawal of Kavanaugh, canceling the previous approval of the candidate. The national magazine is published by the Jesuits, a Catholic religious order also known as the Society of Jesus.
