The Massachusetts native who hired Friday to deliver pizzas in Florida, Cesar Sayoc, the man accused of having participated in a national postal bomb alert, described him as being racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic.

In a phone interview with the Globe on Friday night, Debra Gureghian said Sayoc was working as a delivery guy at New River Pizza & Fresh Kitchen in Fort Lauderdale for over a year. He left in January, she said.

Gureghian, a 59-year-old woman who grew up in Cape Cod, attended Barnstable High School and lived in Watertown before moving to Florida to care for her sick mother six years ago. She said that Sayoc would tell "anti-gay, anti-black talk, anti-Jewish" every day.

Gureghian said that he told her that because she was a lesbian, she was "deformed" and that she should be "put on an island with all the other homosexuals and burned."

"He spit out such garbage, it was so horrible," said Gureghian, general manager of the restaurant. "There is so much hatred today."

She said that she would not react when he would say hateful things.

"I just did not say anything," she said. "My mother raised me to be nice to people."

Sayoc, who has a long criminal history, was indicted on Friday in a bomb scare against a national courier targeting Democratic personalities who exchanged criticism with President Trump. The criminal complaint charges Sayoc with sending explosives by post, illegally transporting explosives across state borders, uttering threats against former presidents, 39, assaulting federal officers and threatening interstate commerce.

He used the same white van that was featured in national news and splashed Friday on news sites to deliver pizzas, she said. The van was adorned with "one billion stickers," she said. She said that there were sometimes KKK stickers and at least one sticker with a bull's-eye on Hillary Clinton's picture on the vehicle. Sayoc, she said, "loved Adolf Hitler."

"If you do not fit his profile, you should go to an island and this island should be cleared," said Gureghian, who held a civilian position for the Massachusetts State Police for 23 years before to move to Florida.

Despite Sayoc's bigoted world view, Gureghian describes him as a reliable worker, a reliable and very clean driver.

She said she was shocked to learn the news of Friday.

"I'm really disappointed," Gureghian said. "Never, in a million years, would I have thought it could happen."
